UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA RESEARCH GRANT (UMRG)
1. BACKGROUND OF UMRG
UMRG is created to enhance research activities in order to uphold the University of Malaya as a world-class research university. These grants can be a platform for University researchers to be more active in research activities.
2. TYPE OF RESEARCH GRANTS
UMRG are divided into two, namely UMRG (Programme) and UMRG (Project). Each researcher can be a Principal Investigator (PI) for ONE (1) type of grant only.
The grant is open to centers / groups / laboratories registered under the Cluster to improve the research center / group / laboratory performance at the University of Malaya.
Head of Programme and Sub-Program under UMRG (Programme) is not allowed to be PI for UMRG (Project).
The grant is open to individual researchers who have research performance (track
record) who excelled in the past three (3) years prior to application.
PI under UMRG (Project) is not allowed to be Head of Programme and Sub-Program
for UMRG (Programme).
3. THE PURPOSE OF UMRG
The aims of UMRG are to encourage exploration of the idea / concept / new theory which will be a catalyst for new discoveries, the development of science and innovation. Specific objective of UMRG (Programme) is as follows:
a) Strengthening the performance of the center / group / laboratory research in order to be recognized as a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) in research.
b) The establishment of areas of research at the University of Malaya, which focused to research niche of the blue ocean strategy.
c) Promote research group among center / group / research laboratory established under the Research Cluster.
d) Improve the skills of young researchers through the concept of mentoring with researchers who have an excellent research record.
4. SCOPE AND FIELD OF RESEARCH
(1) UMRG (Programme)
Research field under UMRG (Programme) is focused on the niche research identified for development as the main thrust of research at the University of Malaya.
i) Priority will be given to research niche areas identified as follows:
a) Poverty and Development
b) Sustainability Science
c) Education Towards an Innovative Society
d) Healthcare and Wellbeing
ii) However, the research area may also consist of other niche proposed.
(2) UMRG (Project)
Research field under UMRG (Project) includes basic and applied research. Area of research is based on six (6) Research Cluster at the University of Malaya as follows:
a) Innovative Technology Research Cluster (ITRC)
b) Frontier Science Research Cluster (FSRC)
c) Wellness Research Cluster (Wellness)
d) Humanities Research Cluster (Humanities)
e) Sustainability Science Research Cluster (SuSci)
f) Equitable Society Research Cluster (ESRC)
· Application for UMRG (Programme) can be made by sending Concept Paper to Research Cluster Office (the date of application will be announced via UMinfo by IPPP).
· Application for UMRG (Project) can be made by log in to UMPortal > Academic > UMRG Online (the date of application will be announced via UMinfo by IPPP).
· Only Registered Cluster Member is allowed to apply for UMRG (to register for Cluster Member, please log in to UMPortal > Academic > eCluster).
